This piece is a work in progress, the unfinished nature of the work mirrors the complex and unresolved relationship between my mother and I. I am actively sewing, working to mend these fabrics, as I am in the process of mending our relationship. This is on my mind constantly. How will I interact with her when I see her next? Although the process may be laborious, at times painful, it is a task I am dedicated to out of love for my mother. This work features found objects from the late Dorothy Gill Barnes’s studio. I felt a connection to the artist and my mother through their shared love of nature. I have chosen to incorporate some of those natural materials here as well as ribbon, lace, and cigarette butts that reference our relationship and my childhood.
